A Commonwealth Virtual School CMVS is a public school in which all instruction is delivered online. Massachusetts currently has two virtual schools that serve grades K–12; and one virtual school that will serve grades 9–12.

A Single District Virtual Schools SDVS is a public school that only enrolls students who live in the single school district operating the virtual school. There are currently nine school districts that operate a Single District Virtual Schools SDVS.
